Lodge cottage, Suffolk

Complete refurbishment and extension of a semi-derelict 19th century estate lodge cottage situated in a village Conservation Area.

The lodge's East elevation

The original 16th century brick manor house on the estate was replaced in the 19th century by an opulent classical mansion and stable block. The mansion was demolished in the mid 20th century and the grand converted stable block now forms the principal house on the estate. At its height, the estate had four drives with lodge cottages at the entrance to each – this is the only lodge that remains.

A new garden gate design was included in the project

The works included underpinning the existing structure due to movement of the clay sub-soil, re-roofing, repair of existing windows, masonry and original joinery and extension in a modest matching style to provide improved kitchen/utility and bathroom facilities. 'Slimlite' double glazing was used in the windows of the extension so that the timber sections could match the delicate 19th century frames of the existing house.
